Either type of work is as profitably as you make it!
Where there are wide open spaces with little in the way of clutter you can be quite productive, especially with LM cleans. But not all commercial premises are the same. Offices can be quite cluttered, footfall can be very heavy so soil load may be far in excess of the majority of domestic carpets. Also you have the fact that work is often specified by someone who has little appreciation of what is involved and see only the effect on budget and the number of brownie points he can earn by getting the cheapest quote.
As to the percentage of commercial work, in my case it has reduced over the years as I have blacklisted breweries for poor payment and the need to work unsociable hours. Also weekends are no longer part of my working week - they are for family.
Commercial work is just another form of getting business turnover. Some c/cleaners may target it more or less then they do domestic work. Me, at one time wasnt bothered where work came from. The one day I realised I liked doing domestic better then commercial.
Why?
Domestic pay quickly - mostly on the day. Commercial you have to wait - sometimes a few months.
Domestic work is carried out a times convenient to me (mostly-weekends excepted), Commercial work is mostly carried out at unsocial hours - evenings/weekends.
Domestic work can be complete in times of say 1 hour to 6 hours, Commercial could take many hours longer and need the help of an occasional assistant.
Other reasons no doubt as well.
Up to the individual which area they like to work and want to do it.
i love commercial work and i seem to be getting a fair bit of it, dont mind out of hours work, quite enjoy going in after everybody has gone home and being left alone to do large areas with no intefearance!!!! yes you may have to wait a month for your dosh but as long as it comes in i dont mind,
I am averaging about five days a month on commercial. Go a right hooli on Saturday, had to buy a 50m tape before I went to quote. I think a balance is nice.
I'm now working towards about 70% commercial.
I love it.
No more carpets with urine, vomit or other nasties in it.
Most stains are coffee, very easily removed.
I like working on my own with no-one around & usually in air conditioned premises.
Parking is virtually never a problem and generally under cover from the elements.
No stairs to lug equipment up, always an elevator if on 1st level or higher.
Bigger jobs equals longer stay on the same property for a higher profit with no running between jobs.
Generally don't have to compete with price gougers anywhere as much as with residential.
Reputation speaks volumes in this line of work.
PLUS, I always pick up work from the employees at these premises.
For some complicated properties, I do a guesstimate where I walk through and calculate how long each area will take me, and work the price out from there.
Yes, to do this efficiently does take time, but you pick it up pretty quick once you know what to look for and know your machine and your limits.
I use a laser measurer for measuring up, it's so much quicker and more accurate, plus the staff seem to like the toys that I play with, gives a touch of "professionalism" to the quotation.
I hope eventually to do very little residential apart from upholstery & leather.
Your left to get on with it and as others have said no urine or nasties. Commercial carpet being made for the job cleans really well. There is also a more reasonable expectation level too. Only thing is most is out of hours work but I like the quiet while working. About 20% is commercial for me! just waiting to be paid can be drawn out.
Can be a nice earner, did two on Monday, so working on a bank holiday missing the great escape and Zulu.
