Hiya all,

Does anyone know if there are any carpet cleaning courses in Wales? I've looked at a couple but for me & hubby to go it would cost about £800 and I've only got £1200 to get training and equipment. Is this doable or am I going to need to set aside more cash?

Thank you  x

£250 + vat in Cornwall for our 2 day hands on course, but to be honest and before anyone else jumps, your budget is not sufficient to start a carpet cleaning business, you need to be looking at more. And better to complete some training before buying equipment that way you will be better advised as to what you actually need before wasting your money on sub standard equipment. It will be worth the investment in the long term

Sorry if that sounds hard its not meant to.

Best regards

Nick

No Nick not harsh at all, I was beginning to think we'd need more. We are defiantly going to get the training first before we do anything just trying to find the right place at the right price. I dont want to just go with the cheapest tho just need to find one thats affordable and good quality. Ideally it would be much easier in Wales as we wont have to pay for overnight accommodation etc.

How much would you suggest for me to save up for equipment roughly so I can budget?

Hi Elizabeth

I echo what Nick said
Without any bias the courses run by Solution are probably the most indepth, easy to understand & up to date by a long chalk. you're a lot closer to Cornwall then I am & that's where I choose to go.
In reality you could start your business with a car, Karcher Puzzi & old hoover (with a little training) for £1200 BUT you'd soon regret it (unless you were aiming for the lower end).
I would guess nowadays a reasonable start up cost (small van, insurance, equipment etc) would be in the region of £7-12K? Then add advertising for the first year & that could up you at least £2K

many people think that entering this "oh so easy" industry because it's said to be a cheap set up cost yet very few last too long?!

As we also have a successful cleaning company we already have 2 good new vans and a big enough customer base not to have to worry too much about advertising. When I bought them I knew at some point we would be doing oven and carpets so made sure they were big enough to cope with everything. For the last year we have been sub contracting a local carpet cleaner and have paid him approx £600 per month some months being more eg before our holiday lets start up at the beginning of the year that month was nearer £2000 it just makes sense to offer this under our services rather than having to sub it to someone else. I dont want to get bog basic equipment I know thats just a false economy really. I'm sure as soon as get the course done i'll have a much clearer idea

Elizabeth;

From an outsider looking in, so to speak, and from this side of the pond, my experience has taught me that making a trip to Cornwall and attending the ever popular SOLUTIONS training seminar(s) would be the absolute best investment in your company as well as in yourself. I express this because with limited funds (especially at the beginning) you surely want to have a proven pathway --without costly mistakes--- for long term success. The people above are only a few perfect examples of the many experienced Professionals whom you will have an opportunity of meeting and picking their brains. These individuals are the very best in their field and are truly honorable.

I also think that the other investment you will ever experience perhaps, is the excitement which you will bring back and employ with immediate success. This kind of excitement is very important and sometimes overlooked or considered however it is a terrific way of "re-energizing" ourselves, our outlook, and the changing of our routines and/or daily grin in a very positive way.

Young Nicholas , I am sure, will offer you several ways of acquiring the necessary (and right) tools to complete your goals easier than you might think! He's darn good at coming up with: SOLUTIONS.

Best always;

Hi Elizabeth.

You have just moved the goal posts quite a distance in your favour.

I agree with others above that your budget, for a serious professional entry into our specialist discipline is too small.

As the Lead Trainer for Solution, you may feel that my views are biased (they are!) so here's a little background information.

When Nick and I first started the training venture together, we were fully aware that the marketplace fell short in so many ways as to the needs of new entrants to our industry. The courses available did not appear to us to offer enough in the way of theory, information or hands-on practical experience and frequently lacking in all areas!

So we designed our courses to give new entrants the best start possible. Unfortunately, we couldn't fit the content into a one day carpet cleaning training course. We were, and still are, adamant that quality would not suffer, so we took the bold step of making the carpet cleaning course two days. Obviously this has cost implications for the students but we just can't send them out "half-cocked" to "half-clean" or "fully c0ck-up" someone's valuable textiles.

To give you an idea of what you will be doing over the two days, apart from the theoretical learning, here's a précy of the practical side.

You will:
  • Perform simple tests to identify fibres
  • Inspect and pull apart carpet samples to identify carpet types
  • Spend several hours treating and removing real stains from a wool carpet sample
On day two, you will practice how to correctly:
  • Vacuum carpets
  • Vacuum stair carpets
  • Pre-condition
  • Agitate
  • Rinse/extraction clean
  • Encapsulation clean
  • Bonnet or Pad/Cap clean with a rotary
  • Dry compound clean

There are many machines, wands and hand tools available for all to use which has the added benefit of allowing you to find which types of tools and machinery best suits your individual needs.

We are not aware of any other company that offers the same level of training as we do at Solution. IMO, it's not a case of whether anyone could afford to attend our training course(s), more like can they afford NOT to attend.

Although at the beginning of this project it was a minor consideration, we have found that almost half of the students attending have been either improvers or of "more senior years". The feedback and testimonials we have had from them has been amazing with them often saying that they have not only been refreshed on knowledge and skills not used for a while, but also learnt many new things about our ever changing industry.

When you are looking at all your options Elizabeth, as well as the cost of the training also look at the value of what's on offer. Not all training is the same (despite what some people have been heard to say).

Safe and happy learning:goodday:
Ken

Hi Elizabeth

Give me a call tomorrow and we can discuss your requirements in a bit more detail and I will be able to provide a list by email of what we would typically suggest including costs. Obviously it will need to be refined for your individual needs. At least it will give you a better idea.

My office number is 01209 204343.

Some of the answers make it sound like you may need to rob a bank, but its not as bad as that. And as you are already in the cleaning industry you may already have certain items covered.

Hope this is of help

Best regards

Nick
