To all my associates in the Leather restoration game, I need as much advice as possible on a new project.

An elderly client was recommended to me to "ATTEMPT" to restore a family heirloom.

This was hand made in the late '60's - early '70's and given to this man's father.

Unfortunately, my client gave this to his daughter & then to her brother.

This chap actually found it in the chook-shed in Grafton a couple of months ago & naturally was heart-broken to see it's condition.

It is now very dilapidated from moisture including urine & chook-crap.

I need to know if it can be restored, including colour, which I doubt.

Some parts of the leather are also disintegrating.

I will post a brief description next to each pic, please be patient as I will add these AFTER I upload to FB.

You'll find these on my FB page, along with notations.

There is also a lot of detail in this, such

as the bullock eyeing of the snake, the "blue heeler" cattle dog & even the water bottle under the wagon.

Many thanks for your help.

Whitish area is supposedly urine residue, several areas (blackish) where leather has deteriorated, plus blackish cast across the top which I don't know.

The rising sun supposedly used to radiate an orange sunrise.

The whitish stuff I believe is urine residue, the black is actually a combination of chook-poo + deterioration.

Leather is very stiff, cracking & separating from the Masonite sheet.

Top of artifact, leather broken away, plus top surface eroded.

Thanks Judy for your earlier input, much appreciated.

How I wish we could get this across to the UK so my guys could take a look at it - I am sure that something can be done despite the level of damage to make it look great again
Always a pleasure to help Shorty

It's a W.I.P. leather is now a lot softer & more flexible.

So soft, it's now fairly flat so that it can be re-glued to the Masonite backing.

I've also safely managed to get rid of most of the whitish urine, plus chook-poo and other filth.

The dark parts have me concerned the most.

After I can sort this best & it's cleaned up, I'll see about air brushing some colour back into it as required.

Not knowing how it previously looked is a stumbling block that I'll have to somehow get over with imagination.

Have a good week-end all.

Hi Shorty
Looks like great progress
The stains might respond to Aniline Cleaner
If you are going to spray try using pigment in Aniline Finish rather than straight pigment as this will be a dyed leather. No good using dyes as they won't cover the damage.

Look forward to seeing this ongoing.
Cheers
