Hi Chris
If you like you could "do a supermarket". This is where they know that signs alone are not sufficiant but put them out anyway knowing full well that if one of their custys were to trip & injure themselves they may pay out up to £5000. This seems a standard settlement for trip hazards.
The official reg states that an area must be properly barriered off using a "physical barrier". Tape is not acceptable, it should be a certain height post & chain as minimum so as to physically stop people entering the area.
I have heard that if a small company were to show a keen H&S awareness & have risk assessments, method statements & H&S policy & carry them out then they are less likely to face major procecution unless fatal accident occours. So overdo the warning signs, put an anti slip mat at every slip site & warn the custy of the hazard.
If you show a blaitent disregard for H&S & take no precautions then you can leave yourself wide open.

Oh happy dayz

I was suking up about an inch of water I half a ladies fashion shop after a thunderstorm with a row of 4 signsand rope across when a custy baged though, lifting the rope and paddled across the floor to get a garment off the rail swearing about wet feet.

Trevor,

Some folk seem to have a mission to give us grey hairs and put themselves pointlessly at risk.

A couple of years ago I was cleaning one of the lounges in a care home. Residents had been moved to other lounges but to prevent them returning whilst I was cleaning I blocked the doorway with a very heavy armchair. At one stage I turned to see a lady in her nineties, skirts akimbo, attempting to climb over the back of the chair.

When we did a big job in Cardiff we got the signs out and put them all over the place. the site agent came over and stopped us working because the signs had not got the Welsh for wet floors on. The receptionist had the broadest Glasgow accent and the agent came from the next town to me Bridgnorth and no-one else had a welsh accent.

Mind how you go.

Blame and Claims

As a Project Manager for a well know supermarket barrier tape ,, must be red and white must be used plus adiquate signage. they also require you to have a risk assesment and a methord statement, safty footwear and ear protection for you and staff,, a bit of a pain but it stops you getting thrown of site......and watch out for the ronaldo,s of claims they will take a dive for anything up to 35'000

Had a 'ronaldo' type once who claimed he tripped on my stuff by van as i was putting away, including trip hazard signs standing against equipment. He got very vocal and i got very annoyed....... told him that if i were to be sued for his injury then i may as well get my monies worth. Amazingly his ankle healed itself enough for him to run off screaming obscenities ........ i felt like the messiah even though i never got to lay my 'healing' hands upon him :g:
