Rough leather

Evening leather people,

have a customer with, what I can see, an Aniline sofa which has rough patches. She wants the problem sorted and has tried some DIY efforts which I have not had a reply yet to.

is there anything that anyone has done before to achieve a result with this as I’ve not came across anything similar in my restoration work

thanks in advance

To add for background:

Hi, it’s just caused by wear and tear it’s about 9 year old but has only just started going rough on that patch over the past year.

I tried saddle soap as I googled how to try and soften a rough patch and this worked short term but then it’s just not worked in the long term.

The leather does scratch easily if you catch it with your nail but will buff back over and restore if it’s just a light scratch. I do have cats though so it does have deeper scratches on here and there on the sides which aren’t really a problem as it’s bound to happen with pets.

Just with the rough patch being on the seat it’s rough on your skin when sitting on it.

The sofa itself isn’t in bad condition to say it’s 9 year old so would be a shame to have to buy a new one!

This is common on wear areas of Aniline Leather where these areas have not been protected and cleaned correctly since new.
The wear areas have become abraded and basically turned into a Nubuck by wear.
The only real way to deal with it would be to apply a finish over the surface which can then be treated.
A solvent based tinted finish could resolve the problem.

Yes Ive got a course booked this year but that's my training for next year.
